Bought this from you some time back. Have been using it on occasion when i need some aromatherapy.. hehe... Has a very calming fragance that is great in reducing stress, and was a life saver during exam periods when i used it everyday. It is way better than any other perfumes i've tried as i can't stand the alcohol smell in commercial perfumes as the alcohol tends to irritate my nose. Not sure about how long a bottle will last though as the bottle is covered so i'm not sure how much is left, maybe you could leave a small opening on the wrapping so users would be able to track usage? Other then that tiny complain, still the best perfume i've got =).. Oh and i sometimes put it on my pillow before i sleep at night too... hehe

Silk and Pearl Powder
Got this from the bazaar from you sometime back. Am not really a fan of powder usually as i don't even use any foundation or cover powder, hehe.. Have been using this on occasion as a night powder for treatment of my eczema. Would put it on after treatment cream and i've noticed that it actually speeds up the recovery process. I've also noticed that somehow it moisturises the skin, never found a powder that could do that. It lasts pretty long too, at least for me as i use it very sparingly.

Tea Tree Oil is a natural biogermicide for the treatment of acne, pimples, insect bites, tinea, ringworm and other skin irritations.

Tea tree has a long history of traditional use. Australian aboriginals used tea tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area.

Tea tree oil contains consituents called terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal activity. The compound terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant and is thought to be responsible for most of tea tree oil's antimicrobial activity.

Uses of Tea Tree Oil

For Skin and Health:

1. Use to treat acne and pimples - dab a small amount directly on affected areas.

2. An anti-fungal for treating Athlete’s Foot, eczema, various yeast infections, toe nail fungus,etc - dab a small amount onto affected area. Apply daily. For wider skin areas, dilute a few drops into a base oil (eg virgin coconut oil), and apply to affected skin area.

3. An antiseptic to be used on cuts and burns - for small cuts and burns, dab a small amount directly on affected areas. For children and large cuts and burns, dilute with virgin coconut oil and apply daily.

4. An anti-viral: it may lessen the symptoms of colds and flu - Try using a few drops in the bath or dilute in virgin coconut oil and apply on chest and throat area.

5. Add a few drops to a vaporizer to loosen chest congestion.

6. Add a small amount to shampoo to destroy head lice.

7. A few drops added to your bath can help with persistent body odor.

8. Treating sinus infection - add about 4 drops of tea tree oil into a bowl of steaming hot water and inhale the vapour.

9. For dandruff and dry scalp. - add a few drops into your shampoo, or add a few drops to some virgin coconut oil and apply to hair and roots. Leave for at least 30 minutes before shampooing off.

10. For diaper rash treatment - Dilute 10 - 20 drops of tea tree oil in 100ml of virgin coconut oil, and apply to cleansed skin after every diaper change.

Note: As a general rule, maximum dilution rate for blending tea tree oil in a carrier oil is 20% tea tree oil to 80% oil. For use on children , keep dilution rates at max 2 % tea tree oil (e.g. max 40 drops in 100ml of carrier oil). For use on babies, keep dilution rates at 1 % tea tree oil (e.g. max 20 drops in 100ml of oil).

For Cleaning:

1. To create an all-purpose cleaner, combine 2 teaspoons (10ml) of tea tree oil in 2 cups of water in a spray bottle - Spray onto areas you want to disinfect, remove muskiness or prevent mould and fungul growth. Remember to always shake bottle before you spray.

2. To keep germs at bay, spray it on high chairs, car seats, and other high traffic spots.

3. Add a few drops to your mopping water to disinfect and clean floors.

4. Add a few drops into your wash load to disinfect and have fresher smelling laundry.

Following an inquiry from a customer about the safety of using essential oils during pregnancy, I thought Id post some information to share with all...

Is it safe to use essential oils while pregnant?

It's safe to use some essential oils while you're pregnant, as long as you're healthy and you're careful with them. Essential oils are highly concentrated substances extracted from plants. They are powerful, so it's important to use them sparingly.

Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, which is a complementary therapy. The oils contain chemicals which can be absorbed into your body. Essential oils can be diluted with a base or carrier oil for massage, or put in a vapouriser for you to breathe them in. Once inside your body, they work in the same way as drugs or medicines. Because essential oil molecules are very small, there is a possibility that they may cross the placenta and reach your growing baby's circulation.

We do not know exactly what effect essential oils may have on a developing baby. Studies have only tested oils on animals, with varying results. It's most likely that you would need to use huge amounts of essential oils before they could do any harm to your baby.

We do know that many mums-to-be find aromatherapy helpful in easing pregnancy niggles. These include backache, nausea or swollen ankles. If you want to use aromatherapy oils, it's a good idea to take the following precautions:

Only use one or two drops of essential oil at a time.
Dilute the essential oil by mixing the drops with at least a teaspoon (5ml) of a base oil before you add it to a bath or massage it into your skin. Grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil work well as base oils 9max 2% concentration).
You can add drops of the oil to a vapouriser, but don't leave it on for longer than 10 or 15 minutes in each hour. If you leave it on for too long, the smell can be overpowering and make you feel nauseous.
It's best to start using essential oils once you are past the first trimester. If you use them in the first trimester, always consult an aromatherapist who's trained in treating mums-to-be.

I started using this "miracle" mist a few days ago every night after my cleansing routine and i've already noticed visible softness and a clearer complexion. Easy to use, and refreshing, this is a must have to perk and freshen the face, transforming it from dull and lifeless to renewed and supple. It works great on hair too, especially on dry split ends. I use it before blow drying my tresses to prevent direct heat damage from constant blow drying. Great product!!

2. Coconut Almond & Silk Body Scrub

This easy to use and "yummy" smelling bodyscrub has got to be my favourite! Used once a week, I simply add fresh milk and a few drops of virgin coconut oil before mixing it to apply on my body. It smells heavenly and works well too! the dry cocount flakes and poppy seed is gentle to my skin yet it does the "scrubbing" work pretty nicely. I heard it works great when mixed with fresh yogurt too, so that's definitely on my list the next time I use this. Thumbs up for scent and purpose! Love this.

3. Pure Bentonite Clay

This mask is simple and stays true to it's function. Mositurises and firms skin. Just a dash of the powdered clay mix with water and leave it on for 10 minutes; that's all it takes. I use this twice a week and have noticed visibly shrunken pores and less oily T-zone. I can feel the skin tighten once applied, however it doesnt "break" like other clay masks I've used, thus this is not a messy affair and is a plus point, especially for those who leave the mask on throughout the night. Highly recommended :)

Why are silicones not good for your hair and skin?

This may be one of the reasons why certain hair conditioners can cause acne breakouts. Also, large doses of silicone can be toxic, which is an issue as silicones tend to build up if not washed away with a proper cleanser, especially on your hair. Continuous build up of silicone on hair will eventually cause your hair to be dry and frizzy.

A much safer and healthier alternative is using natural silk protein instead of synthetic based silicones. Hydrolyzed from silk fiber that is naturally high in protein, it has been used nutritionally for hundreds of years as a functional ingredient in pharmaceutical applications. For those that prefer using it as your sole face moisturizer, I recommend applying a little "Rescue Me" Intensive Face Serum as well for your night time routine. "Rescue Me" will provide your skin with natural oils (since Aloe & Silk is oil free) that is very helpful in helping to boost moisturization, accelerate skin repair and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As usual, apply "Rescue Me" sparingly on cleansed skin, after Aloe & Silk. Concentrate it on scared areas, and wrinkle prone areas of your face (like around your eyes, forehead and mouth).

Directions for use on face: Always shake bottle before use. Apply on cleansed skin. The most economical way is to carefully spray about 3 - 4 times into your cupped clean fingers, and then using both hands to gently dab the liquid over entire face and neck area. Alternatively, you can use a cotton pad or spray directly onto the face. Just remember to avoid direct eye contact as the essential oils may sting. Relax for about 30 seconds to allow the liquid to be absorbed fully into your skin before applying moisturizer or make up. Use at least twice a day, morning and night. You can spritz it on your skin in between if you need to.

Directions for use on hair: Always shake the bottle before use. Apply as a leave-in hair conditioner, spraying on towel dried hair and scalp. Do this before you comb your hair as it is a great hair detangler and will make wet combing so much easier. Can also be applied on dry hair and in-between hair washes to refresh your hair and provide some added conditioning.

Important Note: Keep away from heat and direct sunlight. If you're not using it on a daily basis, I recommend to store the product in the fridge. This product contains food grade preservatives that are a lot milder than most cosmetic grade preservatives. Although they may be kinder to your skin and hair, they are not as effective. This product will be okay for around 2 months if kept properly and not in the fridge. If you plan have the product for longer than 2 months, store it in the fridge. If you are using the regular sized (65ml) bottle on a daily basis, it should last about 3 - 4 weeks.

Bentonite clay is sedimentary clay composed of weathered and aged volcanic ash. The largest and most active deposits come from Wyoming and Montana, USA. This particular Bentonite clay comes from Wyoming.

Bentonite, also referred to as Montmorillonite, is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. Bentonite is very unusual in the fact that once it becomes hydrated, the electrical and molecular components of the clay rapidly change and produce an "electrical charge". "Bentonite is a swelling clay. When it becomes mixed with water it rapidly swells open like a highly porous sponge. From here the toxins are drawn into the sponge through electrical attraction and once there, they are bound."

Bentonite clay is naturally mineral rich, another reason why it is so beneficial to the skin. It is beneficial for all skin types, detoxing, balances oily skin, improves circulation and helps to reduce white/blackheads and pimples. Your skin will be left healthier, cleaner, softer and more refined.

Directions for use on face: A little of this clay really goes a long way. I recommend using about a spoonful amount of the tiny plastic spoon I provide with every purchase per application. Put into a small plastic or glass (not metal) bowl, and add about 2 - 3 parts of water to 1 part of the clay. Mix the clay with your clean fingers. Since Bentonite clay will be slightly sticky in consistency when added to water, you will need to press into the mixture until you get a smooth gel-like consistency. Apply a thin layer over entire face (avoid delicate area around the eyes), or concentrate on areas with pimples or black/whiteheads. Leave the clay on the skin to dry, about 15 - 20 minutes before rinsing off. You can leave it on for longer, or even overnight. Overnight applications are great for oily/ acne prone skin, and for pimple spot treatment. Apply 3 - 4 times a week for oily skin types, and 1 - 2 times a week for normal or dry skin types. For spot treatment of black/whiteheads or pimples, initial daily use may be necessary until black/whiteheads or pimples are reduced. Once your skin is balanced out, you can use it less often, although I recommend using it at least once a week to maintain skin health.

Important Note: Always keep clay in the container dry. Make sure the spoon is completely clean and dry when scooping out the clay for use. If kept properly and dry, this clay has an indefinite shelf life.

How to Apply Bentonite Clay

Step 1 - Place about a spoonful (the tiny plastic spoon) of the bentonite clay into a small glass bowl. This amount should be enough for a thin layer across entire face.

Step 2 - Add about 2 - 3 parts of water to 1 part of clay

Step 3 - Mix with your fingers, the clay will be a bit sticky and lumpy in texture

Step 4 - Keep pressing into the clay until you get a smooth, gel-like consistency

Step 5 - The wet clay feels quite slippery, so apply it in small circular motions over your entire face (avoid delicate skin on an around your eyes). You can apply it a bit more on areas where you have black/white heads or pimples. The clay will appear transparent on your skin when it is wet.

Step 6 - Leave the clay to completely dry on your skin, for around 15 - 20 minutes if you're in a hurry. If you have the time, you can leave it on for longer, or even overnight if possible. The more time the clay is left on your skin, the better it can work, and because you're only using a thin layer, your skin will not be dried out. As the clay dries, it will turn to a light ash gray in colour, and you may feel a your skin tighten or tingle a bit. If you feel any discomfort, please rinse off immediately.

Step 7 - Rinse off the clay. Start by gently dabbing water on your face, then slowly wiping the clay off. Pat skin dry and apply moisturizer.

The limbic lobe is a group of brain structures situated directly below the cerebral cortex of the brain and includes the hippocampus and the amygdala. The hypothalamus releases hormones that can affect everything from sex drive to energy levels. How to Clean Kabuki Brushes

Keeping one's make-up brushes clean is key to fighting infection and ensuring proper application of make-up. Proper cleaning will also help Brushes Last longer. A Kabuki brush made from natural bristles requires great care, as the bristles can be easily damaged if not clean properly. The following steps can also be used for synthetic brushes.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Be sure you are working on a very flat, clean surface.

2. Place warm water in the bowl and add two 1/2 a teaspoon of shampoo.

3. Swirl the entire brush in the bowl for two minutes. Be careful not to submerge the handle, bristles only.

4. After two minutes empty the bowl and add more clean warm water. Swirl the brush for another minute. Repeat.

5. Make certain that all soap has been rinsed off, and shake any excess water out of the bristles (do this with bristles down). If you want to soften the bristles, you could apply some hair conditioner to the bristles, leave on for about 2 - 3 minutes then rinse off thoroughly. Place paper towel on the surface and apply a rubber band, looped once, around the bristles to maintain their shape. Lay the brush flat on the paper towel, facing down.

6. Once the brush is dry remove the rubber band, and put it away.

Important Tips:

~ Always keep brush pointed downward when cleaning.

~ If water leaks into the handle it can loosen the glue in the handle, forcing the bristles to come out, and the brush to fall apart. This quite a tedious task if you put more than a small amount of cleanser in the bowl.

Vinegar Hair Rinse

ok this may sound weird to most of you...but a vinegar hair rinse is reaaalllyyy good for your hair!

Its a great detangler, removes scaly build up on scalp and hair cuticles (especially from hair shampoos, conditioners and leave in treatments), and leaves your hair silky smooth and shiny. Vinegar also has a tonic action that promote blood circulation in the small capillaries that irrigate your scalp.

But doesn't vinegar smell like stinky socks??!!?? Well, it may smell bad initially, but I PROMISE YOU that the smell COMPLETELY disappears as your hair dries....I SWEAR IT!!!

DIRECTIONS:
You can use plain white vinegar, but of course the natural apple cider vinegar is the favourite choice for many.

You won't need to pour a whole bottle over your head, just about half a cup in half a pail of water is all you need! Do this after your shampoo, and no hair conditioner is required.

And you can add a few drops of essential oils, like lavender, tea tree or rosemary, etc, that makes it smell a bit more tolerable and is also good for your hair and scalp.

After the vinegar hair rinse, you can dry your as normal, or rinse a bit with water (although you will want some of the vinegar rinse in your hair still for its superb all-natural detangling effect).

A vinegar hair rinse done once a week, or once in 2 weeks will keep your hair and scalp clean and healthy....and of course smooth and shiny!

All you need is about a cup of whole milk powder (not low fat milk because you need the fat content to moisturize your skin). Add this into a warm bath, while the water is running so that you get a good and even milk solution. Then dip yourself in and soak for about 20 -30 minutes... and don't forget to relax ;)

At first, I was a bit hesitant and skeptical but I decided to give B2B a go since it has the Trial Set which is at a promo price of RM 40.00 inclusive of shipping. Previously, I had problems in finding the right facial set/brand for my combination/sensitive/acne prone (if not taken care of properly). It was either the brands moisturizer felt too hot/heaty on my face, the cleanser too drying causing dry patches on cheeks or the toner smelt too medicinal.

I received my order on 22 August and immediately used the facial cleanser that night.

It took some practice to get the powder to onto my palm. I found a plastic teaspoon and used the back of the handle to scoop the powder out. I dropped a few drops of water and mixed it to a paste. I scrubbed my face with it and let it set in while I brushed my teeth. I thought the facial powder would not thoroughly cleanse my facial skin but I was wrong! I pat my skin dry and found out my skin feeling not too tight and grease-free. After the cleanser, I put on the toner-moisturizer. I LOVE this product.

I was recommended "Rejuvenate Me" for my skin type. It smells SO NICE! Apart from the fact that this is a 2-in-1 Toner & Moisturizer, just a few pumps go a long way. I love the fact that the ingredients of both cleanser and toner-moisturizer are natural ingredients that doesn't contain alcohol or SLS or synthetic stuffs. "I can tell you honestly that I don't have nice skin. It's not my fault, my mum doesn't have good skin either. So aside from using facial products to help improve my skin condition, I also need to wear make-up to look presentable. I don't really wear it for ME, I wear it so people don't feel disturbed by my skin. I've used many drugstore brands before (I frequent Loreal, Maybelline, ZA, Revlon, Secret..the works). I found that though they did cover my flaws up pretty well, it made my skin WORSE! The powdered versions itch my skin, the creamy ones clog them. I simply was 'allergic' to make-up. Until I tried mineral make-up.

Mineral make-up really does let my skin 'breathe'. It feels so comfortable that sometimes I FORGOT I was wearing make-up! No more random scratching and breaking out at the end of every week. I can look presentable and keep my skin healthy at the same time.

It takes about 60,000 roses (about 180 lb) to make one ounce ( 29.57 ml) of rose otto - or to put in a different way 40,000 kilograms to make 1 liter of rose otto. No wonder it is one of the most expensive essential oils in the world!

Rose oil has a deep, fresh rosy aroma and is greatly prized in the perfumery industry. It stimulates the skin, while moisturizing and hydrating, boosting all skin types and being particularly beneficial to dry, mature and sensitive skin. It helps to reduce skin redness, fight inflammations, as well as fix broken capillaries on the skin and also acts as a general skin tonic with its astringent properties.

Pure Mysore Sandalwood Essential Oil (Santalum Album)

The Mysore sandalwood oil is known to be the best and most expensive of all the sandalwood varieties, and is also one of the most expensive essential oils in the market. It is also highly prized in perfumery, having a woody, exotic smell that is subtle, lingering and long lasting.

1) Flower Power 3-in-1 facial cleanser, scrub, mask

- This is a little tricky to use as its in powder form, but I love the idea. It helps to keep it clean and fresh. I had a little trouble mixing the powder with water to make a paste. I panicked at first when I was adding water to the mix, I thought I saw drops of blood in my mix so I turned to the mirror to see if I scratched myself LOL. But it's actually a natural reaction of the powders with water. It's fascinating really! Much more fun that usual cleansing foams.

At first I tried wetting my face before applying the paste, too runny. Then I tried keeping my face dry and then applying the paste. Much better. I can adjust the consistency whether to make the paste dense to apply as a mask, a little drier to use as a scrub, or 'runny' to use as a normal cleanser. GENIUS! I don't need to buy a scrub, a facial foam, a mask to do my beauty regime, it's all in one.

I took your tip in letting the paste 'sink in' after applying while I brush my teeth. Great tip! I usually am a bit impatient at night, coz I'm tired so I usually forget brushing my teeth LOL. Now I have no excuse! I make myself brush my teeth. Way better for me, thank you!

So after rinsing, my face doesn't feel 'tight'. I have a few pimples over my face, throbbing and inflamed. After using the cleanser, my face sort of 'calms down'. It looks brighter, feels softer and is just generally much better.

2) Rejuvenate 2-in-1 Moisturizer & Toner
This is one effective moisturizer. It's non greasy, smells natural and keeps my face clean and soft. With my old moisturizer (Simple Hydrating Light), it's so greasy that I need to wipe off the excess after applying. Not the case for this baby. Skin stays supple for hours, even in air-conditioned environment. I tried rubbing infamously oily areas on my face after a few hours of applying the moisturizer. At first it was still oily. But after a week I can safely say it's much less oily. Love!

3) Spotless 2-in-1 Moisturizer & Toner
I'm glad I have this sample with me, because though my face improved after using the range, once I start putting on makeup all hell broke lose :( I stopped using Rejuvenate and used this instead so I can get rid of my break outs. Skin breathed a sigh of relief. It's not drying (my previous zit zapper was Proactiv's Refining Treatment..Proactiv works but it is super drying) because the ingredients are much kinder to my skin, but it does work! Slowly of course, you can't expect it to go away in a few days. But as I continued to apply it, my acne went away. I'm now waiting for it to completely vanish (just a bit more to go!) before I start using Rejuvenate again.

Pros:

1) More hygienic (cleanser is in powder form and moisturizers are all in a pump bottle)

2) Multi-functional products means more savings (last time I would spend around RM200 for my full Proactiv range). Plus I don't need to tone anymore, so there's no use for cotton pads/balls.

3) Luxurious, all natural ingredients that works wonders for the skin

4) Calms my skin, soothes inflammations, keeps skin supple and fresh for hours

5) Fades acne scars. Not the heavy duty ones though, but maybe it takes a little more time to fade than fresh scars.

Cons:

1) Might be a little pricier than the average drugstore brands, but have to compare them to the likes of Clinique/Estee Lauder etc. In that sense, it's actually very affordable!

2) No built in sun-screen. I think the reason is that it might clog pores. Plus I have an option whether to wear some or not. I only wear it if I'm under the sun anyway, like when I'm out for a run, so it doesn't really matter.

3) Needs a little skill in making the Flower Power paste, but it gets easier with practice.

Other than that, it's a huge plus for me. Already ordered the full sets so that shows my acceptance. Give it try girls!

Based on your advice I am now trying out mineral make-up so I can keep my clear skin and hide imperfections without worrying whether I will have to pay for it later (with fresh zits). Will review mineral make-up soon too, and yep you can post it in your blog.

I've always said that your food intake is crucial to having and maintaining clear skin. In general, avoid foods that are highly refined/ processed and high in sugar and fat, and consume more fibre, fresh fruits and vegetables.... I'm sure almost everyone knows this...right?!

Mineral Make Up

Personally, I very seldom use make-up. I've never used foundation (never liked it), only used baby powder as a face powder, and only sometimes do I apply a little blusher. The only make-up I use often is mascara and some lip gloss.

Of course, I can get away with this because (1) I have good skin and (2) I work from home. It's a different story if you're working a 9 - 5 type of office job, or if you have less than perfect skin. For most women, make-up is a daily essential, and rightly so. After all, it is only professional to wear reasonable make-up to work so that one looks presentable.

The thing is, do we realise that the type of make-up we wear usually determines the type of skin we have?

Think about it, your make-up sits on your skin for at least 8 hours of the working day, if not more... 5 - 7 days a week, for years and years.... The impact does definitely add up doesn't it?

Therefore, if you want healthy clear skin, apart from a good cleansing, toning and moisturizing regime, it is imperative that you invest in the best quality make-up for your skin.

Hence the title of this topic...Mineral Make Up :)

If you're having light to moderate acne, I strongly suggest you take your foundation, face powder and blusher right now and start reading the ingredients list. Look out for ingredients like synthetic dyes (especially D&C red dyes), fragrances and preservatives (you may have to google just to make sure). If your make up contains these ingredients, then there could be a possibility that these are the culprits that are causing your pimple problem. I suggest doing 2 things: (1) Find a way to use less or lighter make up, especially foundation as they tend to clog your pores and not allow your skin to breathe, and/or (2) Switch to 100% Natural Mineral Make Up.

What is 100% Natural Mineral Make Up? To put it simply, it's make up made of all natural, finely ground minerals from the earth, without any of the chemicals, dyes, talc and preservatives found in traditional makeup.

True mineral make up has no expiry date since technically its made up of finely crushed rocks (mineral pigments). When kept dry and used hygienically, the natural properties of the minerals are not micro-organism friendly, which is why the mineral make up can last for a very long time.

Important Note:

Check the ingredients of make up that claim to be mineral make up. Make sure that they do not contain any talc, preservatives, synthetic dyes and fragrances. Cheaper pharmacy brands that are labelled as mineral make up are most likely not 100% natural, so please read the ingredients list.
Avoid mineral make up that contain the ingredient Bismuth Oxychloride. A pearlizing agent that gives mineral makeup that "candlelight glow," bismuth oxychloride is a mineral, but it's not found in the earth. Bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing. Bismuth oxychloride is also frequently used to fill or "bulk up" or bind products. Bismuth oxychloride is considered a skin irritant and can cause itching and rashes and in large amounts it can cause cystic acne as well – it's one of the ingredients you should try to avoid if you have acne or rosacea or sensitive skin.
Even if the make up is 100% natural, I do not recommend that you sleep in it. Always wash off all make up at the end of the day.
Check that the mineral make up has the appropriate SPF factor that you need.
Even though a product is 100% natural, there still could be a tiny chance that your skin is allergic to a specific ingredient. Therefore, when trying out a new product, always do a skin patch test to see if your skin develops any sensitivity towards it. If possible, buy a small sample size first so you can check if the shade and the formulation is right for your skin.
Do note that most mineral make up comes in powder form (although you can get the pressed powder types). Unlike normal make up, they're harder and messier to apply on skin. It'll take some practice before one can perfect the technique.

The main reason I'm posting this is to stress the point that even if you have the best and most perfect daily cleansing, toning and moisturizing regime, if you're using make up that is not healthy for your skin, your skin may not show as much improvement as you'd like. Also, a healthy and balanced diet is important to maintain clear, healthy and younger looking skin for the long term.

These are the worst offenders.

Diazolidinyl Urea
Used as an antiseptic in cosmetics. It may release formaldehyde, known to be highly toxic.

*Found in: body powders, cleansers and soaps, lotions and moisturizers, make-up and make-up removers, shampoo, shaving products, sunscreen.

Imidazolidinyl Urea
The second most commonly used preservative in personal care products (parabens are first). The American Academy of Dermatology recognizes it as a cause of contact dermatitis. Formaldehyde release is a hazard of this chemical. The CIR Expert Panel is reassessing its safety.

*Found in: baby and other shampoos, bath and body oils body powders, colognes and other fragrances, lotions and moisturizers, makeup, permanent waves, and rinses.

Diethanolamine (DEA)
Extensively used for its emulsifying and foaming properties. Associated with allergic reactions and eye irritation. The combination of DEA and DEA-related ingredients is associated with cancer in lab animals. The FDA is currently investigating this link.

Triethanolamine(TEA)
Used as a detergent and dispersing agent. There is high sensitivity to its use. Prolonged contact is particularly irritating. Toxic to lab animals. The CIR Expert Panel recommends use only in small, concentrations, not to exceed over 5%. They also recommend limiting it to rinse off products, such as shampoo. However, some hand and body lotions include it. Combining TEA with nitrates results in cancer-causing nitrosamines.

*DEA and TEA are found in: bath powders, lotions, shaving creams, shampoos, and soaps.

Parabens: Ethyl, Butyl, Methyl, Propyl, and Parahydroxybenzoate
Parabens are the second most common ingredient in skin care products ... water is first. The most widely used preservatives in the United States, they may cause skin rashes and other allergic reactions.
Studies show they possess mild estrogen-like qualities. Preliminary research uncovered parabens in human breast cancer tumors. This does not prove a causal relationship, however. Parabens are ubiquitous. They are an estimated 75-90% of all personal care products. Even many so called "natural" and some organic skin care products contain parabens (check labels!).

There is a gradual phase out of these preservatives occurring in the natural skin care industry. Preservatives are essential. However, there are all natural, nontoxic preservatives that are both safe and effective.

*Found in: baby preparations, cleansers, deodorants, eye-products, lotions and moisturizers, make-up, personal lubricants, nail products, shampoos and other hair products, and sunscreens.

Petrolatum
Also known as petroleum jelly. Purified petroleum is common to moisturizers and other cosmetic products. It forms an oily layer on the skin that prevents moisture evaporation. It purportedly smooths and moisturizers skin, but often has the opposite effect. It causes allergic reactions in some. Manufactures love petrolatum because it is very inexpensive (read: a cheap addition for manufacturers).

*Found in: baby creams, conditioners, creams and moisturizers, makeup, nail products, and wax depilatories.

Propylene Glycol
This is the most common moisture-carrying ingredient, excluding water itself, in personal care products. Extensively used in makeup. It is known to elicit allergic reactions, including hives, and is associated with eczema. Safer glycols are gradually replacing propylene glycol. The CIR Expert Panel maintains its safety in concentrations up to 50%.

*Found in: antiperspirants and deodorants, baby lotions, hair strengtheners, moisturizers, mouthwashes, shaving products, sunscreens, and stick perfumes.

PVP/VA Copolymer
Considered toxic. Some individuals develop thesaurosis, which is foreign bodies in the lung, due to inhalation of PVP in hairspray. Rats ingested intravenously with PVP developed tumors.

*Found largely in: bronzers, eye makeup, and hair products.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
A detergent, emulsifier, and wetting agent. It is drying and often irritating to skin. Associated with eczema. The Journal of the American College of Toxicology states this chemical has a "degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties" and that "high levels of skin penetration may occur at even low use concentration." The CIR Expert Panel is reassessing it for safety.

*Found in: bubble baths, emollient creams, cream depilatories, hand lotions, permanent waves, shampoos, soaps, and toothpastes.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Acts as a water softener and a foaming and wetting agent. Often in products designed for mildness, such as baby shampoos. Yet it leads to eye and skin irritation in some. The CIR Panel is reexamining its position on this chemical also.

*Found in: shampoos, including baby shampoos.

Stearalkonium Chloride
The Fabric industry developed this as a fabric softener. It softens hair, allowing easier combing. Known to cause allergic reactions and irritation to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Considered toxic. CIR Expert Panel is reassessing for safety guidelines.

*Found in: hair conditioners and creams.

Synthetic colors
These are categorized as either D&C-- Drugs&Cosmetics, or FD&C-- Food, Drugs&Cosmetics. Personal care products contain both categories. "D&C" followed by a color holds certification for external use only. You will not find it in lipstick or other products intended for mucous membranes.

(Note: Since skin absorbs much of what is applied, "external use" provides little protection.)

Unlike most ingredients used by the industry, synthetic colors are regulated by the FDA. Yet, most are derived from coal tar. Many people are allergic to coal tar. Of greater significance is the association of coal tar and cancer. Most all coal tars cause cancer when subcutaneously injected in lab mice. In fact, many formerly approved colors are now banned in the US because of recognized carcinogenic properties.

*Used in a large variety of personal care products, most notably hair dyes. What color is that drugstore shampoo ... neon green anyone? Nontoxic all natural skincare products, as opposed to traditional skin care, rely on botanical ingredients for subtle color.

Synthetic Fragrances
There may be up to 200 ingredients encompassed by the term "fragrance". Furthermore, manufactures are not required to disclose actual ingredients in their formulas. They receive protection for such proprietary formulas. Reactions to fragrance in personal care include: coughing, dizziness, headaches, hyper-pigmentation, rash, skin irritation, and vomiting.

*Synthetic fragrances lurk in the majority of traditional personal care products. Even many so called natural products use synthetic fragrance. To be safe, look for 100% "all natural skin care products." Natural essential oils are the ideal fragrance.

I've always loved the egg yolk... after all, it's the best tasting part of the egg right? In fact, I cherished my egg yolks so much I'd often save them for last.... I'd hate to finish them up too soon and have only the egg white to eat!

Although I never gave much thought to it, the egg yolk has always been villianised by health freaks as "high in cholesterol" or will make you fat lah....but I bet they didn't tell you that the egg yolk is by far the most nutritious part of the egg! Being the food source for developing chicks, it's naturally rich in essential vitamins and minerals that are important for our good health as well. Yes, it is high in cholesterol, but like most cholesterol rich foods, they are jam-packed in nutrition as well, especially fat soluble vitamins (like Vit. A, E, D & K) and essential fatty acids. Egg whites, on the other hand, contain far fewer nutrients. The only thing that could justify their consumption is their attachment to their companion yolk.

I Think Freckles Are Super Cute!

I've had a few inquiries from customers asking how to remove freckles... and I am always perplexed? What's so bad about freckles? Why do people think that it's a flaw, instead of just part of their natural skin tone? Why all this hatred for this god-given (or genetically endowed to be more specific) trait?

I personally have freckles, but not much and not noticeable (unless I'm in the sun a lot, which nowadays I'm not). I've always adored freckles in other people, and I honestly think they are cute, add character and make you look more youthful. In this 'whitening' craze times, I feel that the cute freckle has been demonised unfairly :( They are marketed as a skin flaw, and blemish, and sometimes even said to be unhealthy (WTH!).

I feel like I have to make a stand now, and share a better understanding of this freckling phenomenon, and hopefully change a few minds... After all, natural beauty is all about accepting your natural traits and focusing on health rather than on 'beauty as defined by media'. I always say.... if you have healthy skin, your skin will glow naturally, no matter what your skin tone is. Take a stand people... don't blindly follow media and marketing trends of beauty, accept your natural self and focus on being and staying healthy!

Okay...now that I've gotten that off my chest, let's learn about the facts...

What are Freckles?

Freckles are pigmented skin cells that are found most commonly on fair-skinned individuals. Freckles are genetic in nature and most common in children prior to puberty, though many adults have freckles. Freckles are small, individual tan spots that contain more melanin than other skin cells. They DO NOT indicate any sort of skin disorder or disease in a normal capacity.

People with fair skin have less melanin, or pigment, in their skin cells. This factor is almost always indicated by both fair skin and light colored hair, frequently red and sometimes blonde. Exposure to the sun can actually enhance the appearance of freckles because the body may produce more melanin in response to overexposure. Melanin acts as the skin’s protection against the sun’s rays, which causes a person’s freckles to darken.

Freckles are particularly common in children, but often the onset of puberty causes the body to begin to produce more melanin. If melanin is produced evenly throughout the skin it causes the freckles to fade. While many children with freckles will lose them with puberty, some will have this characteristic their whole lives.

The most common location on the body for freckles to form is the nose and cheeks, though many people have freckles on their shoulders, arms and other areas that are frequently exposed to the sun. In some cases, freckles are sporadic, individual spots and sometimes there are several grouped together, making them appear larger and cover a greater portion of the skin.

There are no topical skin products that can remove freckles totally. The only way is using laser treatment, by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.. which I do not recommend (unless it's cancerous..touch wood!)

So, if you still feel that you'd rather have less than more of your freckles, the most sensible thing to do is to reduce sun exposure to a minimum.

So to summarize:

~ Freckles are NOT a flaw, they're just part of your natural skin tone

~ Freckles DO NOT make you look ugly, so do not hate them!

~ Freckles are not bad for your skin!

~ Freckles are CUTE...and youthful looking

~ Whiter skin does not = beauty

~ Healthy Skin = Beauty

~ Be Yourself and Love the Skin you're born in!

How to Make A Simple Tea Tree Oil Toner

Tools:

50ml clean spray bottle (360Beauty)
48ml Rose water, or distilled water
2ml glycerin (360Beauty)
7 - 10 drops Tea Tree Oil (pharmacy or 360Beauty)
2 - 4 drops of vitamin E oil (optional)

Directions:

Add 2ml of glycerin into the spray bottle
Add in vitamin E oil (if any) and Tea Tree essential oil. Shake bottle to combine the ingredients.
Add in rose water or distilled water. Shake again....and you're done!

Note:

You can make this toner with just tea tree oil and distilled water. But you will need to shake the bottle each time before use to ensure that the essential oils are evenly distributed.
If you are only using these 2 ingredients, then I suggest making the toner in smaller batches. For example, using only 20ml of distilled water + 4 to 5 drops of Tea Tree oil at a time.
Glycerin is not only a great humectant (attracts moisture to the skin), but it also helps to evenly dissolve the essential oils with the rose water/ distilled water.
Vitamin E oil is not only a good skin moisturizer, but it is also a natural anti-oxidant, thus helping to keep the toner fresh for longer.
Keep your toner away from heat and direct sunlight!

Natural Tooth Powder Recipe

I hate toothpaste! Over these past few years, the skin around my mouth and jaw line have been really dry (sometimes even flaky), and nothing I've tried (oil, creams, honey, etc) seems to be curing it. I concluded that it had to be the toothpaste, so I tried non-flouride, SLS-free types and the dryness did reduce a little but it did not totally go away. Which is why I decided to try out natural, home-made tooth powder recipes I sourced from the net.

Most of the recipes will call for baking soda and salt, which I have tried but found too abrasive for everyday use. But I came across one recipe that used clay powders, and claimed that it would be much less abrasive than baking soda and salt. So happily I tried it out... and I love it!!! My mouth felt totally clean and fresh after brushing, I did not get that white slimy things in my mouth in the morning, and the skin around my mouth area is improving day by day. After using it for a week, the dry skin around my mouth area is almost back to normal....Yay!

Tooth powders are totally different from toothpaste, and it's not as convenient to use. It may not be suitable for everyone, but I strongly recommend it for those who have problems with commercial toothpaste.

Making your own toothpaste/ powder gives you the highest level of control over what ingredients go into your toothpaste/ powder, so that you can choose natural based ingredients to keep eco- and health-unfriendly chemicals out of the environment and your body. And, by making your own, you cut down on the packaging waste associated with store-bought varieties.

Below is a list of ingredients that can be used to make your own tooth powder, but you should decide which ingredients work best for you.

Natural Ingredients for Making Home Made Tooth Powder:

Himalayan Salt

Baking Soda - Cleans, whitens, deodorizes and is an abrasive.
Natural Sea or Himalayan Salt (fine) - Abrasive
White Kaolin Clay (fine) - Abrasive
Clove Powder - Natural toothache and tooth decay cure, good for gums and gets rid of bacteria
Activated Charcoal Powder (fine) - whitens teeth
Essential Oils (Peppermint, Sweet Orange or Tea Tree) - for taste, freshens breath, antiseptic properties
Stevia powder - natural sweetener, does not cause tooth decay
There are many more... just google to find out!

Basic Recipe:

1. The main ingredients should be either Baking Soda or Kaolin Clay, or a combination of both. This should form about 80% of your final tooth powder. I prefer more Kaolin Clay and less baking soda, but you should experiment and use the proportion that you're most comfortable with.

2. Add a bit of salt, a bit of charcoal powder, a bit of stevia or a bit of clove powder. Just make sure that all the ingredients in your tooth powder are finely ground so as not to be over-abrasive on your teeth and gums. Again, experiment on what ingredient (and its proportion) suits you best.

3. Add a few drops of any combination of the essential oils listed above. Do not add too much! About 5 drops per 15g of tooth powder is sufficient. If your making it for young children, then keep essential oils to a minimum, around 1 drop (or less) per 15g of tooth powder is safe. Essential oils are optional, so you can do without them.

4. Combine all ingredients together and store in a clean, air tight jar.

Just pour some powder onto your dry palm and dip your wet toothbrush onto the powder and brush your teeth like normal. You can dip the toothbrush a few times if you need more tooth powder. Gargle and rinse and you're done!

Yay...another Crazy Rumors Lip Balm Review! And this time it's for the FRENCH VANILLA flavor from the PERK (coffee) range.

I had high expectations for this one since I loved the Orange Bergamot flavored one I had earlier. Been using that on a regular basis, and I'm down to half a stick already. I chose French Vanilla since it was a favorite of many, and was curious to see (or smell) a coffee flavored lip balm as I have never come across any.

I can't say that I am a coffee lover, as I drink both tea and coffee on a regular basis. But whenever I have some extra cash to spare, I do indulge myself with a cup of flavored gourmet coffee. No not mocha (i don't think mocha really counts as a gourmet flavored coffee)... but you know the more yummy sounding flavors like French Vanilla, or Hazelnut, or Almond, or Caramel....

Well, the lip balm did not disappoint... it really does smell like a gourmet coffee... but to me it smelled more like Hazelnut rather than French Vanilla... but still delicious none the less! Just smelling this lip balm makes me hungry... pictures of chocolate (must be because of the Vanilla) seem to flash by somewhere in my sub-consciousness...

So if you're a coffee addict, then you seriously have to try this all natural, vegan lip balm! Not to mention that this is a great textured lipbalm (not too thick or too thin), and it will last for hours per application. And of course it moisturizes the lips... And if you don't fancy coffee, there's many other flavors to choose from. It's just RM15 a stick... a steal I tell you!

Chemicals in Your or Your Child's Toothpaste May Add up to Poison

Think brushing your teeth is good for health? Active ingredients like fluoride, SLS, and silica in your toothpaste may be poisonous, carcingenic and damage tooth enamel.

It's small, it's minty fresh, and it's taken for granted by most of the Western world. But the poison warnings on your tube of toothpaste aren't just for decoration: common toothpaste ingredients like fluoride, triclosan, silica, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide may do more harm than good to your teeth… and your total health.

Location is Everything: Mucus Membranes in the Mouth

Even if you don't swallow any toothpaste, you're at risk from these toxic chemicals. The mucus membranes inside the mouth are one of the most direct routes to the blood, brain and other cells of the body, since the mucosal lining inside the mouth has about 90% absorption efficiency.

Active Ingredients in Toothpaste

The active ingredients in toothpaste are the ones that work to clean your teeth, kill bacteria, and freshen breath. Some of the most common active toothpaste ingredients include:

Fluoride Hardens Teeth

Fluoride is recommended to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Sodium fluoride, the form found in most toothpastes, is also used in rat and cockroach poison, nerve gas, and behavior modifying drugs. It has never been approved by the FDA. Fluoride can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, paralysis, convulsions, and cardiac failure. Four ounces of most toothpaste contains enough fluoride to kill a small child.
In a surprising turnaround, a 1990 study found fluoride to have no significant impact on preventing cavities or tooth decay, while it did cause an increase in dental problems, allergies, arthritis, and cancer. Nevertheless, it continues to be used in virtually all toothpaste.

Triclosan Kils Bacteria

Triclosan is used in toothpaste for its antibacterial properties. It's also used in pesticides, and is classified as a dangerous chemical by the EPA and may cause damage to the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, sterility, convulsions, coma and death. It is a hormone disruptor and is stored in fat, accumulating in the body's tissues with each use.
Worse, in combination with the chlorine used to sterilize normal tap water, triclosan forms chloroform – the carcinogenic gas used as an anesthetic but that can also kill in concentrations just over those needed to sedate.

Hydrated Silica Abrades and Whitens

Hydrated silica is a natural compound from quartz and sand used as an abrasive whitener in toothpaste. Repeated use harms tooth enamel and prevents tooth surfaces from re-mineralizing, causing significant damage to teeth.

Hydrogen Peroxide Bleaches Teeth

Hydrogen peroxide is used to whiten teeth, and is found in most whitening toothpastes. It is a powerful bleach, and is also used in the paper industry, hair dyes, clothing detergent, fungicides, glowsticks and as a rocket propellant. In high concentrations, hydrogen peroxide is dangerously corrosive and explosive. Topical use can cause skin and eye irritation, and blistering inside the mouth and throat. Ingestion of hydrogen peroxide causes vomiting, diarrhea and internal bleeding.

Sodium Hydroxide Freshens the Mouth

Sodium hydroxide is used to give that fresh, slick feeling – by dissolving the surface of oral tissues. Sodium hydroxide is extremely alkaline and dissolves proteins upon contact, right off of your teeth and gums.

Isopropyl Alcohol and Ethanol Freshen

Isopropyl alcohol and ethanol (ethyl alcohol) are drying agents, used to speed the entry of other toothpaste ingredients into the soft tissues of the mouth and gums.
Ethanol is the primary ingredient in mouthwash and is a known carcinogen. It has also been clinically shown to destroy fillings.
Ingesting as little as one ounce of isopropyl alcohol is deadly. In smaller doses, it causes headaches, dizziness, narcosis, nausea, vomiting and coma.

Potassium Nitrate Desensitizes Teeth

Potassium nitrate is one of several chemicals used to desensitize teeth. It does so by blocking the transmissions of nerve cells within the teeth and gums. Potassium nitrate is also found in ice cream, cigarettes, bombs and as a component of gunpowder, where it is called saltpetre.
Even supposedly natural and organic toothpastes contain many of these ingredients, making it ever more important that consumers learn to identify harmful chemicals and avoid them.

Hidden or Inactive Toothpaste Ingredients

Inactive ingredients include chemicals that give toothpaste its color, flavor and texture. Toothpaste manufacturers may not disclose these ingredients on packaging since they aren't intended for ingestion.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Make Toothpaste Foamy

These chemicals are found in shampoo, soap, hand cream, mouthwash and just about every common personal care product, where they provide a soft, foamy texture. They are also used as surfactants in engine degreaser and in car wash soaps.
SLS is known to cause skin and eye irritation and is a suspected carcinogen. SLS has been attributed with causing mouth ulcers (a.k.a. canker sores) by creating microscopic damage to the oral tissues inside the mouth.

Propylene Glycol Moisturizes

Commonly known as antifreeze, propylene glycol is used as a moisturizer and emulsifier in many personal care products – it's about as pervasive as SLS, and just as dangerous. Propylene glycol is known to cause skin and eye irritation and may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea when ingested. It has also been shown to cause mutations, birth defects, kidney and liver damage and seizures in laboratory animals.

Artificial Sweeteners and Flavors for Taste

Every mainstream toothpaste contains artificial flavors and sweeteners to add the right minty taste. These chemicals can provoke allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, and can cause irritation to the gums and oral tissue.

Food Dye Gives Toothpaste its Stripes

Food dyes, like those used to give toothpaste its red, blue or green stripes, are usually made from petroleum products and coal tar. They have been linked to behavior changes, learning problems, allergic reactions, headaches, asthma attacks and cancer.

Even the supposedly natural and organic toothpastes contain many of these same filler ingredients. SLS, in particular, is very difficult to avoid, so it's vitally important that consumers learn to identify harmful chemicals and avoid them in their purchasing choices.

What's The Matter With SLS?

What Is SLS?

SLS stands for sodium lauryl sulfate. It is a cheap foaming agent used in most shampoos, toothpaste, detergents, floor and car soaps, shaving creams, bubble bath suds, mouthwashes, moisturizers, dissolvable aspirins, and pesticides.

Sodium lauryl sulfate has a cousin, seen in many of the same products: sodium laureth sulfate (aka SLES). Petroleum is converted to ethylene, then oxygen is added to form ethylene oxide. When combined with SLS, the solution becomes SLES. SLES is also a cheap foaming agent (a surfactant), thought by some to be gentler than SLS.

And sometimes in “SLS-free” products, you will see ammonium lauryl sulfate (aka ALS) instead. ALS is also a cheap foaming agent (a surfactant), thought by some to be gentler than SLS or SLES.

SLS Controversy

You may not have heard of SLS at all, or you may have sort of heard it’s not great but don’t really know why. The latter was me, not long ago. But recently I looked it up as a part of the Green Your Insides Challenge….

And I was horrified! “Carcinogenic,” “highly damaging to the liver,” “highly irritating and dangerous” were phrases that jumped out at me. Yikes! So today I sat down to research further and share that research with you all, thinking many of you may not have had time to research it on your own.

Much to my surprise, I found Snopes calling this a “Shampoo Scam,” and the American Cancer Society refuting the carcinogenic statements. Even Treehugger debunks the “eco-myth” that SLS causes cancer.

Yet, I went to the Skin Deep website, a well-respected site created by the Environmental Working Group, and the page for SLS notes: “in vitro tests on mammalian cells show positive mutation results” for cancer, “animal studies show brain and nervous system effects at moderate doses” for neurotoxicity, “animal studies show sense organ effects at low doses” for organ system toxicity, and strong evidence for it being a “human irritant.” Despite these scary claims, on a scale from 1 to 10, Skin Deep rates SLS a “2: low hazard.”

Skin Deep rates SLES a “3-4: moderate hazard”. While SLES is does not have a history of studies pointing toward carcinogenic possibilities, it cites concerns that SLES is contaminated by these carcinogenic chemicals:

1. Ethylene Oxide (that’s the “E” in SLES). When I clicked on “ethylene oxide” at Skin Deep, I came up with a “10: high hazard.” (Take a moment to click on that ethylene oxide link and look on the right at all of the products that contain it – yikes.)

2. 1,4-Dioxane, which is a solvent. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this is a known eye and respiratory tract irritant. It is suspected of causing damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Skin Deep also rates it a “10: high hazard.” (And again, do take a look at all the products that contain it.)

Skin Deep rates ALS a “1: low hazard”, for organ system toxicity and skin irritation at low doses.

They Do All Agree On Some Things

So what do you do with that conflicting information? You can do your own research and look into the published articles on the subject at the National Library of Medicine. There are 800 of them.

You can also look at what all the studies have in common: SLS, SLES, and ALS are most definitely skin and eye irritants. Nobody disputes this, lots of studies have shown this. They do strip your hair of oils and proteins (so that many of us have to put them back with conditioners). When in toothpaste, SLS has been linked to canker sores. Swallowing SLS will most likely cause nausea and diarrhea.

Why Bother?

In my search, I also found other ingredients commonly found in many of these household products: DEA (aka cocamide DEA, cocamide MEA, TEA-Lauryl Sulfate, Triethanolamine, etc, etc.) is another ingredient often added as a foaming agent – even the USDA believes it is a carcinogen. Skin Deep lists cocamide DEA a “6: moderate hazard,” as an irritant, toxicant, and carcinogen. Parabens are a family of preservatives found in most of these products. Paraben is “7: high hazard,” sodium methylparaben is “8: high hazard.” DMDM Hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser found in many shampoos, conditioners, and skin care products: “7-9: high hazard.”

And I’m sure some of you have come across other potentially harmful ingredients as well (please feel free to share). So even if SLS and SLES are “only” skin and eye irritants, there are lots of other things in those products that can make you sick.

Rethink The Whole Thing.

We go to the store and purchase a product that some marketer has packaged and called shampoo. We’re supposed to buy it so that our hair can look good. We’re supposed to buy that other product so that our floors can look good (funny, they have many of the same ingredients). And that other product so that our car, our table, our everything else will look good.

Stop and look at what you really need to make your hair, body, and home beautiful. Don’t risk your health because someone said a certain product is the only thing that works. Don’t buy into their marketing. Redefine normal on your own terms.

And this doesn’t mean that you have to risk your pocketbook for a $10 shampoo that doesn’t have all the bad things in it. See if you can find something else that works, something simple.

You can clean your entire house and yourself with only vinegar, baking soda, water, soap, hydrogen peroxide (or tea tree oil), and washing soda. So try it. No need to buy an expensive bottle of something that has 10-15 ingredients in it, trucked from all around the world, packaged, and trucked again to you. Eliminate the excess, for your planet, your pocketbook, for your family’s health.

Beware the floor cleaner in your shampoo

AN ACADEMIC has warned against using certain shampoos which contain a chemical commonly used in floor cleaning solutions.

Universiti Sains Malaysia’s National Poison Centre director Prof Dr Razak Lajis said not many knew that sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) was present in some shampoos in the market.

Dr Razak told Kosmo! that SLS, which makes the shampoo produce more lather, can affect the body’s hormone production and damage skin.

“This will indirectly cause the body to behave abnormally and expose patients to health complications,” he told the Malay daily.

Dr Razak did not list the types of illnesses caused by prolonged exposure to SLS but said that the scalp will become dry and itchy.

“It will also cause hair loss if applied frequently and continuously,” he said.

Make your own body scrub

It's so so so easy to make your own luscious body scrub that will leave your skin super smooth and moisturized.

There are many ingredients sitting in your kitchen that you can use, depending on your skin type and preferences. Let me list them out:

Oils - If you have dry skin, or feel that you need some good moisturization, then you need to scrub with an oil based scrub. You can use any type of food-grade oil, but you may want to pick those that do not have a strong offensive smell. One of the best oils to use is virgin coconut oil and virgin olive oil as these are easily available and have a pleasant or tolerable smell. Make sure to use the 'virgin' grades as these are the best, but the normal ones will do as well. You can also add the more expensive oils in smaller amounts, oils like sweet almond oil, wheatgerm oil, walnut oil, hazelnut oil, rose hip oil, evening primrose oil, vitamin E oil, etc.

Exfoliates/ Abrasive Agents - Exfoliates are another basic ingredient in body scrubs as they gently rub away dry skin and gives you the silky-smooth effect. There are gentle exfoliates and there are the rougher ones, depending on what your skin can tolerate. Gentle exfoliates include oats (great for sensitive skin, it's my fav!), clays, rice flour or any other type of grain flour (try to get the unpolished version if possible) and mashed fruits...yes fruits! Consider tomatoes, bananas, apples, orange pulp, grapes (get the ones with seeds), strawberries....virtually any fruit which you can mash or grind to a pulp. For those that juice a lot, you can save the fiber part of the fruits, add that to some yogurt, milk or oil and scrub away! Mid-range abrasive agents include crushed nuts like almonds, walnuts, etc, and very finely ground riced grains (just blend them in your dry blender), finely ground sugar, baking soda, ground barley, finely ground coffee beans (said to be good to reduce cellulite, instant coffee does not count!)...basically any food item that you can grind down. Rougher abrasive agents include coarsely ground sugar, and coarsely ground anything stated above and salt (do not use salt if you have open cuts and wounds as it will burn to the high heavens :0 ).

Additives - Yogurt, milk, cream, coconut milk, honey, aloe vera, food-grade colouring and flavoring, and essential oils can be added as well depending on your personal preferences. Use essential oils (EO's) sparingly, about 7 drops per 200g of body scrub is safe and will give you the benefits as well as the wonderful aroma lingering on your skin. Lavender EO is relaxing, Geranium EO is balancing, Sweet Orange/ Lemon/Lime EOs are uplifting and Peppermint EO is invigorating and soothing to tired muscles. Other essential oils can be used as well as long as you avoid the herbal ones (like Thyme, Pepper, Rosemary, Cinnamon,etc) as these can cause skin sensitivity. Ginger oil can be used but use it sparingly as it is hot!

Basic Recipe Guidelines

Basic Ratio of ingredients: 1 part oil to 1 part abrasive agent. But you can always vary this according to your preference. Some like more oils, some like a good, hard scrub. Some may prefer an oil-less scrub. You don't always have to weigh out the ingredients though. You can just mix them up in a small bowl enough for one application, and try out the result then vary it for later applications. Rule of thumb, it is good to always try out any ingredient you want to use on a small patch of your skin and see if you react negatively to it. This way, you will avoid major bodily harm! For those with dry skin, you should use an oil-based body scrub after you have rinsed off the soap, and just rinsing off the scrub with warm water. This way, the oils will stay on your skin and will have more time to be absorbed. You may want to this routine just before bed.

Below is my recipe for the brown sugar body scrubs I used to sell. (Substitutes for ingredients in brackets)

140g moderately ground brown sugar
12ml grapeseed oil
40ml virgin coconut oil
1ml wheatgerm oil
2ml glycerin/ (honey - a good skin hydrator)
2ml of food grade flavoring (strawberry/ orange/ blueberry/ rose/ lemon/ chocolate, etc)
up to 10 drops of essential oils (lavender/ sweet orange/ lemon/ geranium/ palmarosa/ vanilla/ peppermint, etc)

Mix all ingredients together and keep in a clean air-tight jar. Scoop out a tablespoon or 2 each time you want a scrub. Make sure you use a clean spoon and avoid any water contamination.

Alternatively, you can use just one type of oil as well if that's all you have. The essential oils can be bought from 360 Beauty (see link under Link Lists).
