Why I LOVE VCO! Reason #1 - Best For Baby

Okay I was going to write a long post of all the reasons why I love Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) but I don't think I will ever be able to finish it so it is best I write about each reason separately. VCO is the one oil I always have to have in my home because I use it for so many things...as a baby oil/lotion, as my body oil/lotion, on my hair, etc... and I even consume it on a daily basis! The only area i do not apply VCO is on my face because for me it has a tendency to cause breakouts, not too sure why though. Maybe it is a bit 'heaty' especially in our hot humid weather or maybe it has a strong purging effect...so I cannot recommend VCO for the face, although it is fantabulous everywhere else! I even know how to make my own, and it will share the easy albeit a bit time consuming process soon ya.

Quick intro on VCO - it is the oil that is extracted from the coconut milk obtained from fresh coconuts. The key word here is 'fresh', which is why VCO smells so good and yummy! For more info on VCO, you can click HERE

VCO is:
  • Anti fungal
  • Anti Viral
  • Anti Microbial
  • Anti Inflammatory

I literally cover my little ones in VCO after every bath. I mix some essential oils such as Lavender, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus with their VCO for an additional skin healing boost and refreshing smell. Not too much essential oils for their delicate skin, keep it below 20 drops per 100ml of VCO. I don't even use that much, probably around 10 - 15 drops in total. So here are some ways I use VCO for the little ones...

My trusted refillable VCO bottle
1. All over body and face oil - I cover my little ones in VCO after their bath. I try my best to cover every inch of their skin, which is a feat in itself if you have wriggly ones that just can't keep still! For younger babies, make sure to always apply on skin folds and joints to prevent rashes and keep their skin clean. I never use baby powder because I find that the 'nice' smell quickly fades and baby will not smell nice for long. However, with VCO, the kids have no BO, even after many hours and even with perspiration. That's because of the antibacterial nature of VCO that helps to keep their skin clean and inhibit odour causing (as well as other types of) bacteria.

2. Ear cleaner - I put some oil in the palm of my hand, dip the cotton buds in VCO and use it to clean around and in their ears. VCO is antibacterial so this helps to keep ear infections at bay, plus the goop comes off much easier with oil.

3. Heal minor cuts and scratches - just dab a little oil and it will heal much more quickly.

4. Nappy oil - I always apply VCO after every diaper change, and so far no rashes!

5. Cradle Crap - I've always applied VCO on their heads from day one, and they only had a very very minor case of cradle crap. It was on a very small area, smaller than the size of the 5sen coin, which went away after a few days.

6. Massage oil for boo boos - whenever my active toddler comes running to me crying that somewhere hurts, eg feet, ankle, knee, hand, head, etc, I will check to see if it's anything serious. Most of the time, it's not, so I take some VCO and rub a little on the painful area, give a kiss and send them running happily away, hopefully not to do more damage! Once, my son had a minor ankle sprain, and he was limping a bit for a day or two. Nothing too serious but I massaged his ankle with the oil 2 - 3 times a day to speed up his recovery and help strengthen the joint.

Important notes:

  • Don't use VCO on a newborns face for the first one or two weeks (anywhere else is fine). This is because the skin at this stage is very delicate and VCO can clog those tiny tiny pores and cause an acne breakout. Some babies will get a form of acne in those first few weeks with or without having used VCO, and in my experience applying VCO on that only makes it worse. In fact, it is advised to not use any cream or oils during this stage, and the acne should clear by itself in about a week or two. It is helpful to apply breast milk on the affected area from time to time whenever possible.
  • When applying VCO on baby's face, a little goes a long way. Apply a bit of oil onto fingers, warm it up a bit and then apply on baby's face. Too much VCO on the face can clog pores and cause a type of acne which forms in small clusters, usually on the forehead. If you see this, use less VCO for the face.
  • There are some rashes, especially the ones on the face, that just won't go away even after applying VCO, and for these type of rashes I will apply some Emu oil (sometimes mixed with Tea Tree or Lavender essential oil) instead. Emu oil is very effective for healing stubborn rashes, and will do so quite rapidly too. I apply Emu oil on the affected area every few hours and the rash will be gone in a couple of days. I use Emu oil sparingly though because it is very expensive!
*You can get VCO in most supermarkets nowadays, and I usually buy the 1 liter bottle which costs between RM60 - RM80 depending on the brand. They also sell in 500ml sizes for approx. half the price, which makes it perfect if you want to try out the oil for the first time.

Stay tuned for more wonderful ways of using this fav oil of mine!

Homemade Coconut Milk Oil Hair Mask for Dry Scalp and Hair

One of the very best ways to get rid of a dry itchy flaky scalp is using a homemade coconut milk oil hair mask. It will help hydrate your scalp and hair so they dandruff can go away and stay away. This mask even helps treat spit ends, hydrate dry hair, and help add shine and bounce to hair again.

The natural ingredients you will need to make the coconut milk oil hair mask are about 1 cup of coconut milk, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, and 10 drops of your favorite scented essential oil. Coconut milk can be bought in small 200ml (i think?) boxes at the supermarket, so you just need to use one box per application. Of course, fresh pressed santan is still the best so if you have that, use it!

The way to make the coconut milk oil hair mask is by pouring the 1 cup of coconut milk, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, and 10 drops of your favorite scented essential oil into a small mixing bowl. After you combined the ingredients together until you get a slightly thick creamy white coconut hair mask. Now this hair mask is very runny, but it works wonderfully. Once the mask is made you can use it right away.

Now when you are ready to use the coconut milk oil hair mask to help treat and heal your dry scalp and hair you are going to want to put on an old tee shirt you do not mind getting dirty. You will also need a tight fitting shower cap. After you will tilt your head back over your bathtub and pour the hair mask directly into your hair. You do not need to get your hair damp or wet first if you do not want too. Some people like too, but it isn't needed. As you are pouring the mask into your hair work the mask into your hair and massage your scalp with it for a couple of minutes to make sure you hair and scalp is completely soaked and drenched in it. After place all of your hair into the shower cap and place it over the top of your hair so the coconut milk oil hair mask doesn't drip all over you. Leave the mask in your hair and on your scalp for about 30 minutes to an hour. If you really want to help hydrate your hair even more you can sit in the sun on a sunny day and allow the top of your head to get all warm so the coconut milk and oils can soak into your scalp and help moisturize it better. I love the cooling sensation that coconut milk has on your scalp... it's so refreshing and a great way to de-stress!

Then once you are done with the hair mask you will need to get into the shower and rinse you hair right out. This will take several minutes too do. After you will want too take a good shampoo and wash your hair like you would usually do. You may need to wash your hair twice, but this is perfectly fine. You may even feel you need to use your daily conditioner as well after shampooing. Once you have done all this pat your hair dry and let it air dry. You will notice as your hair dries it will be much softer, shinier, and manageable again. Your scalp will not feel itchy or dry and the flakes will be gone. If you have a really dry scalp you should use this coconut milk hair mask at least twice a week.

I hope this coconut milk oil hair mask helps those of you out there suffer from a dry itchy scalp and dry hair. I wish you all some very happy hair days ahead of you.

WHERE TO BUY VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

Lovers of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) can rejoice as now they're much easier to find! You should be able to get a 500ml or 1 litre bottle from Cold Storage or Jaya Grocer supermarkets. May be available in hypermarkets like Tesco or Giant as well. And also available from any organic shop that sells organic food.

When buying VCO, make sure that it's cold-expressed, and that it is pure and organic. This means that it should only have Pure Virgin Coconut Oil stated in its ingredient listing. It should be a clear and colourless liquid, and should have a nice, sweet fresh coconut aroma. Should taste fresh as well...

Once you've bought a bottle, you may want to transfer some into a smaller bottle that is meant just for skin application. The rest of the oil can be consumed, or can be used in your daily cooking or baking.

You can use a pure version of VCO for your skin and hair, or you can add essential oils to it.

Method:

  1. Pour about 100ml of pure VCO into a clean plastic bottle or jar.
  2. Add in 15 - 18 drops of Lavender essential oil (Beauty360)
  3. Add in 3 drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil (Beauty360)
  4. Close the bottle or jar and shake vigorously to make sure the oils are evenly diluted and distributed in the oil.
  5. Again, you can experiment with different types of essential oils. Just make sure that the essential oils are skin-friendly, and do not exceed 21 drops of essential oil for every 100ml of VCO.
  6. Blends for babies and children under 4 years should be restricted to Lavender or German Chamomile essential oil, and should not exceed 1 drop of pure essential oil for every 100 ml of VCO. Pure VCO is great for babies too!
  7. Children aged 4 - 12 years can take up to 15 drops of essential oil for every 100 ml of VCO for daily use.

Consuming Virgin Coconut Oil can help you LOSE weight!!!

Here's an in-depth article to explain exactly how this wonder oil works... it's a bit lengthy but you'll have a much better understanding by the end of it...

Coconut Oil: A Low-Calorie Fat
By Bruce Fife, N.D.
©2001
(From http://www.coconut-connections.com/weight_problems.htm)
Not all Fats are Alike:  We have a dilemma here. Fat is, to put it bluntly, fattening. The more fat we eat, the more calories we consume, and the harder it is to lose weight. But if we cut down on fats, we also cut out the essential fatty acids and the fat-soluble vitamins.

What if there was a fat that had fewer calories than other fats and contributed no more to weight gain than protein or carbohydrate, and actually promoted better health, would you be interested? Sounds like a pipe dream doesn’t it? It’s not. There actually is a fat that can do this. That fat is found in coconut oil.

Replacing the fats you now eat with coconut oil may be the wisest decision you can make to lose excess body fat. We often think that the less fat we eat, the better. However, you don’t necessarily need to reduce your fat intake, you simply need to choose a fat that is better for you, one that doesn’t contribute to weight gain. You can lose unwanted body fat by eating more saturated fat (in the form of coconut oil) and less polyunsaturated fat (processed vegetable oils).
One of the remarkable things about coconut oil is that it can help you lose weight. Yes, there is a dietary fat that can actually help you take off unwanted pounds. Coconut oil can quite literally be called a low-fat fat.

All fats, whether they be saturated or unsaturated, from a cow or from corn, contain the same number of calories. The MCFA (medium chain fatty acids) in coconut oil, however, are different. They contain a little less. Because of the small size of the fatty acids that make up coconut oil, they actually yield fewer calories than other fats. MCT oil, which is derived from coconut oil and consists of 75 percent caprylic acid (C:8) and 25 percent capric acid (C:10), has an effective energy value of only 6.8 calories per gram. (1) This is much less than the 9 calories per gram supplied by other fats. Coconut oil has at least 2.56 percent fewer calories per gram of fat than long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). (2) This means that by using coconut oil in place of other oils your calorie intake is less.

This small reduction in calories is only part of the picture. The amount of calories coconut oil contributes is in effect closer to that of carbohydrate because it is digested and processed differently than other fats. The digestive and metabolic effects are discussed below.

Produces Energy, Not Fat
When people go on diets to lose weight, the foods that are restricted most are those which contain the most fat. Why is fat singled out? We know it is high in calories, but there is also another reason. Because of the way it is digested and utilized in our bodies, it contributes the most to body fat. The fat we eat is the fat we wear – literally.

When we eat fat, the fat is broken down into individual fatty acids and repackaged into small bundles of fat and protein called lipoproteins. These lipoproteins are sent into the bloodstream where the fatty acids are deposited directly into our fat cells. Other nutrients such as carbohydrate and protein are broken down and used immediately for energy or tissue building. Only when we eat too much is the excess carbohydrate and protein converted into fat. As long as we eat enough to satisfy energy needs, fat in our food always ends up as fat in our cells. Only between meals when physical activity outpaces energy reserves is fat removed from storage and burned for fuel.

MCFA, however, are digested and utilized differently. They are not packaged into lipoproteins and do not circulate in the bloodstream like other fats, but are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy – just like a carbohydrate. So when you eat coconut oil, the body uses it immediately to make energy rather than store it as body fat. As a consequence, you can eat much more coconut oil than you can other oils before the excess is converted into fat. It has been well documented in numerous studies using both animals and humans that replacing LCFA with MCFA results in a decrease in body weight gain and a reduction in fat deposition. (3-9)

These studies have provided the scientific verification that replacing traditional sources of dietary fat, which are composed primarily of LCFA, with MCFA, yields meals having a lower effective calorie content. MCFA can be a useful tool in the controlling of weight gain and fat deposition. The simplest and best way to replace LCFA with MCFA is to use coconut oil in the preparation of your food.

A Metabolic Marvel
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to take a pill that would shift our metabolic rate into a higher gear? In a sense that is what happens every time we eat. Food affects our BMR. When we eat, many of our body’s cells increase their activities to facilitate digestion and assimilation. This stimulation of cellular activity known as diet-induced thermogenesis, uses about 10 percent of the total food energy taken in. Perhaps you have noticed, particularly on cool days, that you feel warmer after eating a meal. Your body’s engines are running at a slightly higher rate, so more heat is produced. Different types of foods produce different thermogenic effects. Protein-rich foods such as meat increase thermogenesis and have a stimulatory or energizing effect on the body. (*This is true as long as you don’t overeat. Overeating puts tremendous strain on the digestive system which can drain your energy and make you feel tired. This is why we often feel sleepy after a big meal.)

Protein has a much greater thermogenic effect than either carbohydrate or fat. This is why when people suddenly cut down on meat consumption or become vegetarians they often complain of a lack of energy. This is also one of the reasons high protein diets promote weight loss – the increase in metabolism burns off more calories.

One food that can rev up your metabolism even more than protein is coconut oil. MCFA shift the body’s metabolism into a higher gear, so to speak, so that you burn more calories. This happens every time you eat MCFA. Because MCFA increase the metabolic rate, they are dietary fats that can actually promote weight loss! A dietary fat that takes off weight rather than putting it on is a strange concept indeed, but that is exactly what happens, so long as calories in excess of the body’s needs are not consumed. MCFA are easily absorbed and rapidly burned and used as energy for metabolism, thus increasing metabolic activity and even burning LCFA. (10) So not only are medium-chain fatty acids burned for energy production, but they encourage the burning of long-chain fatty acids as well.

Dr. Julian Whitaker, a well-known authority on nutrition and health, makes this analogy between the long-chain triglycerides (LCT) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT): “LCTs are like heavy wet logs that you put on a small campfire. Keep adding the logs, and soon you have more logs than fire. MCTs are like rolled up newspaper soaked in gasoline. They not only burn brightly, but will burn up the wet logs as well.” (11)

Research supports Dr. Whitaker’s view. In one study, the thermogenic (fat-burning) effect of a high-calorie diet containing 40 percent fat as MCFA was compared to one containing 40 percent fat as LCFA. The thermogenic effect of the MCFA was almost twice as high as the LCFA: 120 calories versus 66 calories. The researchers concluded that the excess energy provided by fats in the form of MCFA would not be efficiently stored as fat, but rather would be burned. A follow-up study demonstrated that MCFA given over a six-day period can increase diet-induced thermogenesis by 50 percent. (12)

In another study, researchers compared single meals of 400 calories composed entirely of MCFA and of LCFA. (13) The thermogenic effect of MCFA over six hours was three times greater than that of LCFA. Researchers concluded that substituting MCFA for LCFA would produce weight loss as long as calorie level remained the same.

Coconut oil contains the most concentrated natural source of MCFA available. Substituting coconut oil for other vegetable oils in your diet will help promote weight loss. The use of refined vegetable oil actually promotes weight gain, not just from its calorie content, but because of its harmful effects on the thyroid – the gland that controls metabolism. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils depress thyroid activity, thus lowering metabolic rate – just the opposite of coconut oil. Eating polyunsaturated oils, like soybean oil, will contribute more to weight gain than any other fat known, even more than beef tallow and lard. According to Ray Peat, Ph.D., an endocrinologist who specializes in the study of hormones, unsaturated oils block thyroid hormone secretion, its movement in the circulation, and the response of tissues to the hormone. When thyroid hormones are deficient, metabolism becomes depressed. (14) Polyunsaturated oils are, in essence, high-fat fats which encourage weight gain more than any other fats. If you wanted to lose weight, you would be better off eating lard, because lard doesn’t interfere with thyroid function.

Farmers are always looking for ways to fatten their livestock because bigger animals bring bigger profits. Fats and oils are used as additive in animal feed to quickly pack on weight in preparing them for market. Saturated fat seems like a good choice to fatten up livestock so pig farmers tired to feed coconut products to their animals for this purpose, but when it was added to the animal feed, the pigs lost weight! (15) Farmers found that the high polyunsaturated oil content of corn and soybeans quickly did what the coconut oil couldn’t. Animals fed corn and soybeans packed on pounds quickly and easily. The reason these oils worked so well is that their oils suppressed thyroid function, decreasing the animal’s metabolic rate. Soybeans are particularly bad because of the goitrogens (anti-thyroid chemicals) they contain. (16-17) They could eat less food and gain more weight! Many people are in a similar situation. Every time we eat polyunsaturated oils, our thyroid gland is assaulted and loses its ability to function normally. Weight gain is one of the consequences.

Up until now most people have been afraid of using coconut oil because of the propaganda war waged by the soybean industry. People were led to believe that coconut oil was both unhealthy and fattening, neither of which are true. The fats in coconut oil, for the most part, do not become fatty tissues on our bodies. They produce energy. This is one of the reasons why food manufacturers put coconut oil or MCFA in sports drinks and energy bars. It is interesting to note that soybean oil does just the opposite. It promotes weight gain and fat deposition. We use more soybean and hydrogenated oils than ever before. Over the past couple of decades, as soybean oil has replaced tropical oils in our foods, the problem of obesity has mushroomed. Both adults and children are much fatter than they used to be. It appears that the soybean industry’s war on coconut oil has contributed to our expanding weight problem.

If you want to lose unwanted weight, the best thing you can do is to avoid those oils that make you fat and start using coconut oil – the world’s only natural low-fat fat.

The Coconut Diet
According to the Mayo Clinic, 95 percent of those people who go on weight loss diets regain all their weight back within five years. Many regain more weight than they had before. The diets not only don’t work but can make matters worse. In order for a diet to work it needs to be permanent. This cannot be done with a weight-reducing diet.  These types of diets are looked on as temporary restrictions in food, and as soon as the weight is lost we go back to eating the way we did before, the way that made us fat in the first place. You never stay slim by eating the way you used to. In order to lose weight permanently you must make a permanent change. This, however, is undesirable for most people. Who in their right mind would want to remain on a weight-loss diet forever? These diets are just too restrictive and in many cases unhealthy.

But what if I told you there was a diet that you would like, that you could stay on permanently and still enjoy most of your favorite foods without worrying about counting calories or weighing food? For lack of any better name I call it “The Coconut Diet.” I call it this because it is based around coconut and the fact that coconut oil is a reduced-calorie fat which promotes weight loss.
The coconut diet is simple. The most important and most unique feature of this diet is that coconut oil and other coconut products are used as much as possible. Most people are not accustomed to using coconut, so at first they may think this might be difficult, but it’s not. You can add coconut products to your ordinary way of eating without noticing much change.

The most important change is replacing all the refined vegetable oils you currently use in your food preparation with coconut oil. Eliminate all margarine, shortening, and other hydrogenated oils from your diet. Olive oil and butter are okay, but use coconut oil whenever possible.

The second thing you should do is use other coconut products as much as possible. ( Hurray!!! Now we can eat all the santan rich foods we love...like nasi lemak, curry mee, and the kuihs...) Find ways to use fresh and dried coconut. You can find recipes in cookbooks. Coconut milk is a wonderful item that can be used in a wide variety of dishes. It can replace cow’s milk and cream in most any recipe and tastes great. Some of the dishes I make using coconut milk include butterscotch pudding, coconut milk pancakes, clam chowder, chicken almondine, and creamy coconut gravy, to mention just a few. Coconut milk that you buy in the can is not sweetened so it can be used for a wide variety of main dishes or desserts. With delicious meals like these, dieting can be a pleasure, and because there are no calorie restrictions to worry about, it can easily be maintained for life without feeling hungry or deprived.

When combined with a high-fibre diet, using coconut oil and coconut products can have a remarkable effect on your weight and your health. For more detailed information about using coconut products to lose unwanted weight I recommend the book Eat Fat, Look Thin: A Safe and Natural Way to Lose Weight Permanently. This book outlines a dietary  program based on coconut and includes numerous delicious recipes.

P.S. A quick and easy way to start consuming virgin coconut oil is by taking 2 - 3 tablespoons of it in a day. Straight from the bottle, onto the spoon and into your mouth. Trust me... it's really yummy! But remember, not too much (3 TB is max if you're just starting) as you can experience major detoxing effects like headaches, diarrhea (the oil is actually cleansing bad bacteria from your gut), vomiting, etc if you overdose! If taken in the right doses, you will experience increased energy, and you'll tend to feel full faster and longer (meaning you won't be craving for sweet and sugary foods too much). Plus, you'll definitely notice much smoother skin after about 2 weeks.

Virgin Coconut Oil & Sun Protection

One of the most interesting facts about people who live in tropical climates in asia, where the people are constantly exposed to the rays of the sun year round, is that skin cancer is almost unheard of in these places.

In the US, people are constantly warned about the dangers of exposure to the sun, and yet the sun helps our bodies produce much needed nutrients for our skin, such as Vitamin D, which has been shown to prevent cancer.

Once again we see that coconut oil is probably one of the main reasons people in tropical climates can spend so much time in the sun and not suffer from skin cancer.

Coconut oil has wonderful antioxidant properties that protect the skin from free radical damage. Also, when coconut oil is consumed and used topically on our skin, it helps our bodies absorb other nutrients more effectively as well, such as Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant nutrient that protects the skin.

It should be noted that when reports like this are made, invariably some will try using Virgin Coconut Oil exclusively as a sunscreen and go out and get burned! Some have even reported that sometimes the coconut oil works wonderfully as a sunscreen, while at other times they seem to get burned. It seems that the oils you put into your body are just as important as what you put onto your body in regards to sun protection.

It has been found that if one eats foods loaded with polyunsaturated oils, generally they will burn more in the sun. It is theorized that when one eats foods cooked in polyunsaturated vegetable oils, often with trans fatty acids, that one is putting oxidized lipids into their skin tissue that are causing free radical damage, and more susceptible to burning in the sun.

So if you just got done eating some french fries from a fast food restaurant, you may be more susceptible to sun burn!

The Benefits Of Virgin Coconut Oil

VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

The health benefits of virgin coconut oil (VCO) include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength. These benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing, etc.

The Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil

Hair Care: Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair, giving it a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.

Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing and hence it helps in removing stress. Applying coconut oil to the head followed with a gentle massage helps in removing mental fatigue.

Skin Care: Coconut oil is an excellent massage oil for babies and adults alike. It acts as an effective moisturizer on all types of skin,  including dry skin. The texture of coconut oil on the skin is comparable to that of mineral oil. Further, unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin with the application of coconut oil. Coconut oil therefore is a safe solution for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. It also delays wrinkles, and sagging of skin which normally becomes prominent with age. Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections. Therefore coconut oil forms the basic ingredient of various body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams, etc., used for skin care.

Premature Aging: Coconut oil helps in preventing premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

Heart Diseases: There is a misconception among many people that coconut oil is not good for the heart. This is because it contains a large quantity of saturated fats. However, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful as it happens in case of other vegetables oils. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.

Weight Loss: Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.

Pancreatitis: Coconut oil is also believed to be useful in treating pancreatitis.

Digestion: Internal use of coconut oil occurs primarily as cooking oil. Coconut oil helps in improving the digestive system and thus prevents various stomach and digestion related problems including irritable bowel syndrome. The saturated fats present in coconut oil have anti microbial properties and help in dealing with various bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc., that cause indigestion. Coconut oil also helps in absorption of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Immunity: Coconut oil is also good for the immune system. It strengthens the immune system as it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid which have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is claimed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia.

Healing: When applied on infections, it forms a chemical layer which protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. Coconut oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues.

Infections: Coconut oil is very effective against a variety of infections due to its antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, etc. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, etc. Coconut oil is also effective on fungi and yeast that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete's foot, thrush, diaper rash, etc.

Liver: The presence of medium chain triglycerides and fatty acids helps in preventing liver diseases as they substances are easily converted into energy when they reach the liver, thus reducing work load on the liver and also preventing accumulation of fat.

Kidney: Coconut oil helps in preventing kidney and gall bladder diseases. It also helps in dissolving kidney stones.

Diabetes: Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and improves the secretion of insulin. It also helps in effective utilization of blood glucose, thereby preventing and treating diabetes.

Bones: As mentioned earlier, coconut oil improves the ability of our body to absorb important minerals. These include calcium and magnesium which are necessary for development of bones. Thus coconut oil is very useful to women who are prone to osteoporosis after middle age.
Dental Care: Calcium is an important element present in teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in getting strong teeth. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.

HIV and Cancer: It is believed that coconut oil plays an instrumental role in reducing viral susceptibility of HIV and cancer patients.

Energy and Endurance Booster: Finally, coconut oil is often preferred by athletes and body builders and by those who are dieting. The reason behind this being that coconut oil contains lesser calories than other oils, its fat content is easily converted into energy and it does not lead to accumulation of fat in the heart and arteries. Coconut oil helps in boosting energy and endurance, and enhances the performance of athletes.
